\”Do you believe in God?\” she asked him.

\”I am an academic of religion. It\’s hard for me to be close to something I study.\”

She looked at him again, \”Do you believe in God?\”

An excerpt from a book I read recently. I have always found some organized religion just incorrect in their teachings. That interpretations from a Bible are absolute. Things are black and white. When I was 10, my CCD teacher spoke of something like that. And at that tender age, I was shocked by it, finding it injust and unfair. To some, that could be what led me \”astray\”. Yet recently, I realized it\’s not the religion that is \”corrupt\”. It is the one who interprets it, the organized religion. Man could be corrupt, but God is not.

Even though, nowadays I have described myself as an atheist, lacking a lot of spirituality.

There was an atheist rally I attended once in Berkeley. It was funny. More in the sense that they praised science almost as religious followers praised God. But there is a difference, theories can be disproved. The Word can only be misinterpreted, but is set in stone.

Well said. Thus, all the wackos all over the world, in different ways, of every \”religion\”.

I beg to disagree. I don\’t believe that God created the world IN SIX \”DAYS\” as we understand them now.

  3. Are u speaking of God based only in the Christian religion? How will we adress the other religions?

  4. I believe \”six days\” to be a yard stick, a time scale — not 24×6 of our hours.

  5. I didn\’t say every religion consistently believe in absolutes! Just that life is all but a perspective. And religion too. Yes as in God or gods. For some, it\’s a way to believe that there is a purpose in life, a purpose in the world. And for others, it is a way of life. It\’s just that…the wedding last week had many religious overtones and it got me thinking. The people who believe in absolutes are the ones that give me bad impression of religion, especially Christianity.

It just seems that some wars are fought over the belief in absolutes. Why can\’t everyone get along!?

aaarrggh, thinking gives me nausea. :( ok enough.

  6. Scientific theories are akin to religious interpretations in that they are subject to revision (reinterpretation) or falsity proofs.

The Ultimate Science, as it is often called, consisting of complete knowledge of all subjects, would be closer to the \”set in stone\” word of some divine being.

  7. \”The people who believe in absolutes are the ones that give me bad impression of religion, especially Christianity.\”

What if there is an absolute truth? I\’m not just talking about Christianity. I mean it is possible that the Muslims or the Hindus are right but just that you and I may happen to believe otherwise. The fact that I believe in something doesn\’t make it true. The fact that you disagree (about the existence of absolute truth) doesn\’t make it untrue. What is true must be independent of what we think about it. Being human, there are countless differences between us, be it gender, culture, personality, and faith. It is impossible for us to agree with one another on all issues…
