Yesterday at Presenting Data and Information course, Edward Tufte noted, “There are only two industries in the world that refers to its customers/clients as users. Computers is one of them.”
I was at that course on Tuesday, so we just missed running into each other. It would appear that Tufte recycles his jokes :)
I’ve heard that before from another author who talks about writing on the web.
So what’s his big solution? The notion of “user” is embedded in everything we do, because ultimately this is a developer-driven industry, entrenched with a mindset long-established by developers. Some care about what we have to say. Others brush us off. On the list of important things to sell these people on… how high of a ranking does a terminology change carry?
I don’t care :)
What I care about is the users using, or more specifically, having their use patterns comform to my wishes.
