Oddly enough, almost every year since college started…I begin to struggle with the concept of a \”friend\” every this time of the year. It\’s always during the latter half of the semester that I meet new people. And it prompts me to reconsider my entire set.
I did get a excellent grade on my paper on the contested category of a friend. Too many of the parameters of a friend are value-laden. I find myself meeting people who can do the same exact things and act the same way that my current \”friends\” do. So what makes one person different from the next?
I think what sets friends and aquaintences apart is the history you have with one another. The time you\’ve spent together allows them to know the real you… all your likes, dislikes, quirks, and personality. Sometimes they end up knowing you better than you know yourself. I can\’t call a person I just met a \’true friend\’ because they probably don\’t know much about me, or even care to. Friendship is something built on time, and grows stronger with each passing day.
A friend is someone who can make you laugh when you\’re day just isn\’t going the way you planned it. A friend is someone you can trust; someone you know will be there for you when you\’re in need. It\’s someone who will start to miss you when you\’re not around. A friend will love you and care for you, and expect nothing in return.
I know we sometimes use the word \’friend\’ loosely to include \’aquintences,\’ but true friendship does exists — it\’s just sometimes rare to find.
I disagree. History can change. I would rather that my \”true\” friends not know that much about me. But I realized I should have not posted this entry here, because it prompts comments.
Yeah, I wish b2 had a comment enabling option…
comment disabling! we must make that request to michel. maybe there\’s a b2 hack. :D
look, i commented. okay, now i\’m done.
How does one change somethings thats already happened? The only thing that changes is your perception of history, not the history iteself.
