It was one of those unwanted nights when a debate went longer than it should. A conflict of some sort. So today, I woke up with a puffy left eye. Bad karma, perhaps?
Although it doesn\’t take into full account everything that was said last night, what had bothered me the most was this person\’s perception of volunteering that by volunteering to help out the disadvantaged, we are only further encouraging them to get things for free. Apparently he\’s quite the capitialist at a tender age of 20. Disadvantaged people tend to have many setbacks-learning disablitieis, mental problems, etc. They are not getting stuff for \”free\”. Of course, there a few that abuse it, but still. I volunteer at the Job Consortium and this is where we help people get back on their feet. He said, a waste of time. why help those who cannot help themselves? Good point, selfish little boy! I paraphrase this part: I am in a race. There are those who get water breaks all the time. [here he\’s alluding to \”rich kids\”] I don\’t get water breaks. I get hit by a bat every so often. Yet I still manage to be in the top 5. Do I really want to stop to help those who have fallen down to get back up?

I wish I was at the big game! The year that I was born 1982…was when the play happened. In high school, the week before the Big Game all the teachers from Cal and Stanfurd would dress in yellow/blue and red, respectively. You could sense a happy competitive spirit in the air. I would go to my calculus class to be greeted by a red shirt then I would go to my gov\’t class where my teacher would be streaming yellow and blue all over the classroom.
Edit: CAL WON. tee hee! bears over those trees! 28 to 16, BEARS! We\’re going to the BOWL!
what an idiot!!! EVERYBODY needs help in some form or other at some level or other.. i suppose he went through school without ONCE ever getting tutoring for that chemistry class or clarification on a difficult subject.. i suppose he shouldn\’t be counting on the government subsidizing 30% of medical school so that it\’s not even more astronomically pricey… he shouldn\’t agree with contributing socially because maybe those people who live under bridges will decide to stop \”sluffing off\” and just get a job–nevermind the fact that they don\’t remember the last time they saw a social security card let alone one with their name on it.. nevermind that some of them used to be in the military service– nevermind the people who fought for his sorry ass\’ right to sit there with the time and audacity to comment about not helping others who were less fortunate..
i\’m not one to say that complete communism is the structure our society needs for success.. and i\’m certainly not a socialist so don\’t even get me started…capitalism–healthy competition provides for progress and excellence.. but i hope for his sake that he learns sooner rather than later that giving back is not only the right thing to do but it is indirectly helping yourself by bettering the average quality of life for everyone, himself included..
— and god forbid he ever develops any feelings of intrinsic reward
i wonder what he might think about getting into an accident or developing some massive ailment, and then suddenly finding that oops hospitals now will not admit him unless he can pay.. they just can\’t be bothered with such large scale charity cases.. or better yet.. they\’ll accept him if he has proof of insurance, but damn sorry the insurance company just can\’t afford to cover something like that–too much damage to their average risk pool.. guess you\’re shit out of luck.. damn catastrophic events! *shakes head and gets off soap box*
awwwwww justine!!! :D That\’s exactly what I think too. There are always people who benefit from aid, but of course there will be the few who are taking advantage of it. I couldn\’t believe that he never donated ANYTHING in his life. If I could, I would donate a lot of my food, my blood and my time. Hey isn\’t America too capitialist anyway? Sweden seems to be in much a better state. Sigh.
not all the facts, but it was a debate of the second kind. the learning kind. it was exclusively financial to clarify, but that doesn\’t make it any less inconsiderate. everyone has to learn at some time, and so it appears that my time is now for this topic.
exploring and learning from faults is constructive. condemning people for them is not.
you know brad i thought we had an unspoken agreement not to visit each other sites to discover what each person is thinking. You\’re not entitled to that. Who says that I am not thinking anything else?
The most common phrase I heard today was…why does this person matter so much? The more you come in here and tell me this, that, this, that the less I want to speak to you again.
