I am staring at a CDE (common desktop environment) at the unix machines in the cs labs right now. And I am realizing how ugly it really is. This squarish grayish control panel on the bottom and the ugly wallpaper (can you believe I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to change it…unsuccessfully). Plus the icons that are so…geeky and rigid. Functional, yes. Aesthetics, no.

Every GUI should look like Mac OSX. Where when you click on something, it bounces. :D bouncy bounce! And when something has an error, a dialog window shakes like nobody is watching.

edit: I have found the SOLUTION. the problem with this version of CDE is that the stylemanager isn\’t on the main control panel but is hidden in the desktop controls.

  1. AHhh.. I remember X-windows! My friends were showing me how to change my configs in my .bashrc file. heh That was fun.. back in the days. :) There\’s even a command to change people\’s backgrounds…remotely! I remember sending hello kitty background to these guys. hehe

  2. one time I left my shell open on the staff computers…and someone messed with my .bashrc scripts making it so that whenever I login I would see \”YOU WILL GO SNOWBOARDING WITH COOL PEOPLE\” 100 times.

  3. oh yea.. and one of my friends edited my .bashrc and put sleep(30) so everytime I logged in, it started taking longer and longer… grr

  4. CDE isnt so bad. pretty, no. functional, yeah. i like the way osx looks, but i think i prefer the clean look of windows xp NOT in the bubbly mode, but standard windows. it\’s clean, and simple, and efficient.

  5. hahha, .bashrc files are fun to play with.. reminds me of all those tricks i played on people during highschool by editing their netware logon scripts.

  6. I LIKE BUBBLY TOO BUT I HAVE TO DO LOTS OF THINGS SO IT GETS IN THE WAY! >:O THATS IT, WE NEED TO JELLO WRESTLE TO RESOLVE THIS!
