It\’s interesting what Alex said yesterday while we were studying Ling…
And it took me a whole day to decide that I agree and disagree with certain parts of it.
I had mentioned that I was one of the founders of the BLAH club, which is a blogging club on campus. He bought up the idea that having a club was against everything that blogging is about. That blogging is supposedly something where you create an online persona and have other people interact with that. And he also mentioned how a recent cyberpunk author reflected on his blogging experience…and realized that it had a negative impact on his creativity.
I agree with the part of creativity. I can\’t write like I used to before I ever had an online journal/online blog. Perhaps, it\’s because I find myself writing for an audience rather than myself which was I had intended the entire blog and journal to be about. And it even spreads to my papers and essays. My papers turn out very choppy and graced with long complex conjunctions.
But the community. It\’s not that at all. Consider rbj. The message board is one of most popular aspects of being part of the community. And yes even the-protagonist.com community. It\’s not that we create an online persona and have other people look it in awe. It\’s rather that it becomes more of a support group of whiny teenagers and lost college students. We don\’t have less to say because of it…but more to say. As a result of such communities, we can reflect on ourselves with prompts.
One reason that I blog is because I don\’t want to keep repeating the day\’s story over and over again.
In other news, I had an interview today. The company is made up of people who are obviously recent Chinese immigrants. It was hard for me to understand them. Their accent is similar to that of my mother\’s…but usually I can understand what my mom is saying…but not them. And the odd thing was, the interviewer asked me if I had residency or a H-1 visa. I said that I was a U.S. citizen. She asked the question again. I started to say that I was a U.S. citizen again, wondering if she knew that being a citizen means that I am a resident (am I not wrong?), but instead said that I was a resident. GAAAAAAH.
